I’ve enrolled for almost a month now to Ligonier Connect since I was interested to study economics one time for a message.
The courses that I have taken so far are Philosophy I and II, Economics for Everybody, Life and Thoughts of Jonathan Edwards, Christian Worldview and Church History I.
Here’s just one of the chunks of lessons I had grasped from R.C. Sproul on three common types of government:
1. Dictatorship– power and control are in the hands of one or of a few. This type of government capitalizes on fear to remain in power. If a person or a group is successful in giving courage to the masses, this system crumbles. (Like what happened in EDSA I.) Example governments are Singapore in its foundation years (good example), Marcos’ Regime, WWII Germany, etc.
2. Monarchy– power and control are in the hands of a sovereign monarch who usually rules for an entire lifespan or by heredity. This type of government capitalizes on honor. The efforts are directed towards developing tribute to the king and instilling it in the minds of their constituents. If the monarch is no longer honored, this system crumbles. Example countries are Thailand, Bhutan and England.
3. Democracy- power are in the hands of the people who elected representatives among themselves to govern them. The strength of this government lies on public virtue, or the quality of individuals. The more virtuous the “demos” are, the more this system progresses.
Once the national morality, education and virtue fall down, this system also crashes.
Propagation of values could be spread through the educational system, religion, family influences, media, and many other things. The capital lies on public obedience, laws, mercy, compassion, hardwork etc.
In my opinion, since we are a democratic country, I think the major 2 things we have to develop more are: (1) Values and (2) Education. The more we bank on these two, the more the essence of democracy is maximized.
One of the reasons Democracy has been successful in the West is because of their culture of education and learning. Especially in the years of enlightenment and renaissance that they have gone through in the past hundreds of years, where most people flocked to learning and that gave democracy their fruitful years.
However, since the Philippines in our early state, hasn’t been in the eras of rapid scientific and educational boost, I would say that it could have been preferable to have had control and power on either number 1 or 2 as of those moments.
Nevertheless, I would agree with one Reformer who penned the words that “Fallen men cannot rule themselves.” As depraved humanity, without God, everything goes downward spiral. If the fallen man reigns, every system crumbles, no matter how good or honest it is. “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain that build it.”
In my thinking, no system of government above are preferable or could even lead to success of a nation without one factor. It has to be number 4.
4.) Theocracy – power lies on God. Theocratic people have God as their King of kings and Lord. As Christians, we are no longer a democratic people. As Christians, we are in Theocracy. Christ is our Monarch, our ruler, our leader. Our citizenship is no longer Filipino, but in the heavens. (Philippians 3:20)
Only God could lead man to true and “good success” (Joshua 1:9) and only righteousness exalts a nation (Proverbs 14:34).
