Chinkee Tan’s conference in Bacolod City, Philippines- A Review

Background

I was exposed to Chinkee Tan’s teaching videos on Youtube when I was searching for financial tips and investment guides. I like how he ministers to the Filipino nation and the world in general by sharing financial wisdom based on common sense and Scriptures, as well as being a personal example of his own teachings.

What I liked about his videos is the contextualized approach he has to his audience. In other American coaches online like Dave Ramsey and Zig Ziglar, but of course nothing compares to a person who is well-acquainted with a culture of a certain people.

One thing I like about Chinkee’s message is that he makes the Bible come to life, and using it as a tool to promote sound financial literacy to our needy nation. He is one of the Filipino voices in righteous and Biblical financial stewardship.

Absolutely, it is undeniable that there are things we do not fully agree with other people. We don’t have to agree in everything. The essence of democracy and Christian sociological outlook is freedom of beliefs, not freedom from or coercion to one’s beliefs. A Christian persuades others to agree in the most important truths such as Soteriology/salvation, morality and other major doctrines, but may disagree in many minor things.

The Seminar Title

The seminar was entitled “Developing the Millionaire’s Mindset”. Actually, I never noted the title at first. I just bought a ticket, went to the seminar, and did not mind the title, until one fellow Christian came to me few days later, and our conversation resurfaced the title.

It sounded like a Prosperity Gospel at first, but I did not mind, because you can never judge a seminar by its cover. I know that the principles shared are sound. For other people, it may seem like a get-rich-quick scheme, but it is actually not.

The Seminar Course

The main core of Chinkee’s speaking was the human mindset. He shares from personal experience and from the Scriptures. He targets that when the mind is changed, everything in a person’s life changes.

Romans 12:2 says that “be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” To change a life, teach a life. To change a nation, educate a nation. This is discipleship in action.

I am happy how the Philippines is being blessed by Christian Financial authorities. I wish many more will develop and become one, that a future generation will be raised, an army equipped with wisdom and knowledge. It has to be a generation that will not see wealth as a curse, although it could be, but that they should see wealth as a tool. It is an instrument for good, and has to be managed in the right principles. It has dangers, but it also has greater and eternal significance.

I believe that before God blesses a nation with wealth, that nation must first have the right mindset and attitude about wealth. There is a wealth from wicked means, but wealth from righteous means is even better.

I realized that poverty is both a mindset and a decision. Yes, of course, there are poor people in the Bible who got the favor of God, and there are rich people who got God’s disfavor. But the point is that the Philippines must have a Biblical and righteous view of wealth. The Philippines, in order to be great and good and meaningful, must be enlightened by truth and be driven by truth about wealth.

Yes, we are to be contented, we are to avoid covetousness at all costs, we are to be satisfied with the blessings poured out into our lives, we are not to neglect the mandate in Genesis 1:28 that we are commanded to propagate and replenish the earth. A mentality that neglects the stewardship and development of material resources is surprisingly a mentality that is opposed to the Biblical worldview. Of course Chinkee Tan is not perfect, and we always need discernment every time we hear speakers.

In the following paragraphs, I will be sharing to you my personal notes in Chinkee Tan’s seminar, and I hope you will get something good and beneficial along our journey to true understanding and use of wealth.

Money does not change a person, it only reveals.

Money is not the root of all evil, it is the love of money.

Listening is like eating fish. Swallow the valuable flesh, spit out the bones.

The faintest ink is sharper than the sharpest memory.

Fun is important in learning.

Being struck by a lighting 23 times at the same location has a higher probability than winning a lotto.

God has given man the power to create wealth. This drive comes from God.

Surround yourself with negative, and you soon become negative.

Knowledge is money.

Money cannot create money. Ideas do.
