This is a character portrayal piece I took from John 4 about the woman at the well. This was used for a youth conference Literary contest. I thought it may benefit others looking for something like this.
Enough!!! I’m so tired of my life!! (crying in anguish) I’m so hopeless!!! I don’t know what to do!! I can’t explain this, there’s so much emptiness in me, I tried everything! everything! tasted everything! Yet I can’t find anything in this world that satisfies.
People are disgusted to me! and I’m disgusted to myself too! I got five husbands, frustrated many times, I’ve never been contented. I’m the subject of gossip, I’m an outcast! I’m a useless worthless woman. Shame on me! Who can help me (cry, sob)
(stand and changed blocking)
That was my life before, until one day I met a man who had forever changed my life.
I have to go now, it’s noontime.(wipes tears) The sun is at its prime and it’s the hottest time of the day. Better to go at noontime so that no one is at the well, cos I’m so tired of those women, those gossipers!
(Walks toward the well, saw a man sitting, and got surprised)
hooah!!! Who is that man sitting on the well? Ahh!!! Oh! (carefully examining the man) He is a Jew! Why is he here? He’s not supposed to be in Samaria!
The Jews avoid us! They despise us cos we are a mixed race! they don’t like us Samaritans!
Anyways, he won’t talk to me, I bet. For men don’t talk to women in public.
But as I approached the well, that man startled me! “Will you give me a drink?,” he asked.
What kind of Jew was this? (wondering)
and with such a puzzle in my head, I asked, “Sir, you are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan! and a woman! H-how can you ask me for a drink?”
and “Sir, you have nothing to draw with, the well is deep, where can you get that living water you are saying?”
I kept on telling him statements that I think can take him down, but that man kept on pressing, he won’t be silenced!
(very soft) until….. (look to the eyes of audience) (loud) he said something that blew me away! He said “GO CALL YOUR HUSBAND” and later He said, “Yes, you have no husband cos you have FIVE! and the man you now have is not your husband!”
(goosebumps/amazement) His Words cut my heart. (touch heart). Those words were like a sword that pierced through my soul! My heart was bleeding. Yet i told him, “when the Messiah comes, He will explain everything to us.”
Then…. (shocked) all of a sudden, that man spoke the very words that forever changed my life! He said, “I that speak to you am HE.”
AHhhhhH!!!! I can’t believe it!!! I met the Messiah! the long awaited Savior! I met Jesus!
His words…. all of a sudden! came rushing like the waters and it cleansed me!
I found it! Yes! Jesus! He is the answer to my longings! to my emptiness! to loneliness! and hopelessness! only He!!! can satisfy!!!
His words echoed like the words of life, “For whosoever drinks of the water of this well shall be thirsty again,” so true!!!! I am never satisfied in this world. but to Jesus! He is the living water! In Him I can forever be satisfied!
I plead for your help! Lord! Please help me! Lord I need you! This is my chance now! My chance to be free! Only you! Can quenched my thirst! Oh! (Cry and tears with joy)
That man became so special, so precious! His Name is Jesus. His whole person transformed me. I felt His Words running through me and inside me! (ecstatic/ extremely happy/ intoxicated with joy)
It glows like the light
It grows like a seed.
It glows in me. It grows in me!
I glow, I grow in Jesus! Then it’s time for me to go!
I am leaving my jar and I will go to the city, Samaria! my city! and tell everyone about Jesus! and I said, “Come!!!!Come!!!Let’s go!!! See a man who told me everthing I did, could this be the Christ!?” (happy)
Because in Christ, I glow! I grow! I will go for Him! I will go for Jesus!
And many of my fellow Samaritans in the city believed on Jesus, as I testified to them. Jesus abode there two days, and many believed on his own word.
(BOLDLY) In Christ!!!! I GLOW, I GROW, AND I GO!!!!
