Several months ago, I started a study series with the book of Proverbs. I was led to share some of my notes in this blog. Let me start from the middle part of chapter 8. Below each verse is my commentary and insights of the verse.
When reading Proverbs, one the most dominant emphasis of the author is wisdom. He preaches to young men to seek it in this life, and bargain it as compared to nothing. In my previous post, I mentioned that in the original language, wisdom means skill. It is the ability to live life skillfully. More deeper, wisdom leads us to know God and Christ, because Wisdom is God Himself (8:22).
Proverbs 8:19 My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.
The fruits of wisdom are better than riches. Riches come, people enjoy the fruits of it, but if riches are not held in wisdom, they are soon gone. Diamonds, gold, and money are not forever. They are fleeting, temporary earthly goods that will soon pass away. But if our lives are built on wisdom, we have something that is better than the world.
Wisdom, as the Hebrew word suggests, does not only refer to skills of living. Wisdom is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. God the Son is the personification of wisdom. When a man lives wisely, he lives godly, he acts like God.
v.20 I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment:
Wisdom leads us to right lifestyle. Never will wisdom lead you astray. Away with all the principles that this world can offer you, only let wisdom dwell in your heart. As Solomon preaches, “buy the truth and sell it not.” Whenever we go wrong, whenever we are astray, it’s because we did not let wisdom grasp our hearts. We entertained foolishness.
Wisdom directs our lifestyle in a step by step decision, mingled with discernment. As thousands of decisions await us everyday, it is through good judgment we can achieve right discernment, where the big picture shows a life in wisdom.
v.21 That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.
Want to become a blessing? Wisdom will make us a blessing to our loved ones. When our families are in distress, weakness or down-heartedness, there is a great remedy that we can share to them: wisdom. When we let our life and mouth speak wisdom, people who hear us receive refreshment and their souls’ thirst are quenched.
Through godly wisdom, a man becomes a possessor, a lord. Wisdom gives a man power that will in return be a channel of blessing to others.
v.22 The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
Wisdom is Eternal. The Lord possesses wisdom even before the beginning of the world. This speaks of the eternality of wisdom. It has no beginning, nor ending.
Wisdom is Immortal, it never dies. It will never become obsolete nor out of relevance. Kill it, and it will live again. Hide it, and it will find its way out. Discover it, and you will live forever. Search it, and you find life.
v.23-29 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
Wisdom did not have a beginning. Before there was time and space, there is Wisdom. It dwelt with God. Its throne is forever. Its power is like no other. Wisdom is exalted above the universe and the heavens.
A wise person is a godly person. These two can never be separated. No godly man is a foolish man, because God is wise and Christ wise, and so must “mini-Christs” or Christians be.
Greatest news: wisdom traveled a very far journey, the longest journey. Wisdom traveled from heaven to earth. Wisdom dwelt among us. Wisdom lived with us. Wisdom talked to us and knew our pain and troubles. Wisdom suffered greatly. Wisdom healed us. Wisdom saved us. He became one of us.
v.30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
Wisdom and God had a close eternal relationship. They are friends forever. It was brought up with God and knew God very well. Wisdom is the daily delight of God. God is happy every moment with wisdom. They are extremely intimate and loving. No second that one is not in the other’s thoughts. Wisdom rejoices before God, and God rejoices in the presence of Wisdom. Together, their life is happy and satisfying. Their presence is full of joy and pleasures.
v.31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.
Wisdom rejoices in the earth where people dwell. Wisdom is happy to be with man. Happy is the man who meet wisdom. Wisdom is great to hang out with, He is joyful, kind, and good. He is friendly and approachable. Good advice always comes out of His mouth.
When wisdom and men dwell together, the result is happiness. In the presence of wisdom, their are pleasures and delights, and that will be forever.
v.32 Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.
Happy are the people who live their lives in wisdom. Blessed are the nations whose God is the God of Wisdom. Their culture will be blessed, their territories will be abounding and their lives will experience the awesomeness of this Person.
Blessed are the people who live their life with Him and pattern their lifestyle with this glorious Friend. Walk in wisdom, walk with Him, and your life will never be the same again.
