1 Peter 1:13 – Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
I would like to share this lesson outline we had discussed last Youth Sunday school on how we should view education:
Christians are to be consistently and truthfully committed to education because it is the will of God for every believer.
We must prepare our minds for it, work for it, pay for it, and seek for it in this life.
Education is not about accumulating knowledge, getting proud and earning lots of money, but it is about developing your life by what you have acquired and skilfully use them for the glory of God.
We must find our passions and gifts in life, with the goal of mastering them and finding someone we can look to as a mentor.
The word of God in 1 Peter 1:13 exhorts us to prepare our minds for action, or in other words, use it to the best of our reasoning power.
First, what are enemies of Education in man’s heart?
1. Pride of stupidity- the attitude of exalting foolishness and mocking diligence in other serious students.
2. Laziness- this mostly occurs to those who take up a college course who have no love for that certain field of study. Or to people who claim themselves Christians but don’t have an inner hunger and thirst for the Word of God.
3. TV- major barrier and destruction for students
4. Not willing to invest effort- loving ignorance and rejecting wisdom
Goals of Education
What is the ultimate goal of education? To make money and earn a pride-lifting degree? Making money is not to be your main concern in acquiring education. It will only make you more frustrated, miserable and dissatisfied. Education is not to make ourselves full of the world, but…
1.) To make you a better servant of God. (2 Tim. 2:15)
We must study both God’s Truth in the Bible and in Academia (secular universities) to show ourselves approved unto God, or in other words to please God. If our motive for studying is just to have something to boast or show ourselves approved unto men, then we are heading towards a miserable life. Killing ourselves in a study field we don’t like, to please people we don’t like.
Education is only a tool that should lead us towards maturity in our relationship with Christ. It is to make us more generous members of the church, so that we can give more, serve more, and make ourselves better servants in His kingdom. Whatever your office or profession in life is, study to become just and skillful in this life.
That’s why the Bible is a very important part of every student’s curriculum. Since we don’t have that subject in most of our universities, we have to balance secular and spiritual, university textbooks and the Bible. It’s because university curriculum is not complete, we need the Word of God to make our minds and bodies healthy, mature and presentable before Him.
2.) Knowing God
Study in order to be a Christian full of good works (Eph. 2:8-9), to do well in your life and in your service to the body of Christ. To know God and Jesus Christ in your pursuit of education. To know God is the true education and eternal life (John 17:3), Christ is the bottom rock of all sound knowledge.
Whatever your profession is, this is your goal. Not to worship money, or boasting yourself with the goods of the world. If you are not of the world, you would naturally feel you don’t belong here. But get good education with the two goals mentioned above. In other words:
A. Holiness- to become better, to grow, to be sanctified and to be more mature, and
B. Knowing God- glorifying God, loving God, remaining in God because you grow in your knowledge of Him through your studies.
Why study other subjects? Is the Bible not enough? We need secular education because All truth is God’s truth. Math is a study of God’s truth in exact science. In Geography, Chemistry and Physics, we can examine God’s truth there as His revealed workmanship. For example, the Law of Gravity is a truth. It can never be false, it can never be said as fraud because it is a truth in the planet God created. So, all truth is God’s truth.
God has two books:
1. Bible – declares the glory of God
2. Nature- (Psalm 19:1, Romans 1) – the heavens declare the glory of God and his workmanship
Studying science, true science, is studying God’s work. Evolution is not true science, or shall we say, cannot be proven as true, since it is only a theory until now. All truth comes from God, and so whatever field a Christian is in, he delights in there because we live in God. Even in the works of unbelievers, they can manifest something which God has already set as truth in this universe. “For in Him we live and move and have our being” Acts 17:28
In our generation and country today, studying is considered sissy or loser. Many ridicule those who seriously study and develop their life.
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.- KJV
The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom,
and whatever you get, get insight – ESV
